APW - Stephen Van Wyck, New York, verge fusee, 59mm, silver OF original pair cases bearing London hallmarks for 1802, "E L" marking in rectangular cameo for casemaker Edward Leeming, outer with paper for New York watchmakers with names indistinct due to fading and loss, white enamel dial with upright Arabic numerals, KWKS, verge escapement, diamond endstone, gilt mvt with ornately pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock with an urn at its neck, gilt locking dust-cap with ornate decorative engraving surrounding cock aperture, s#4574. Per the excellent info at Richard Newman's www.colonialwatches.com website, Stephen Van Wyck was active from 1792 to 1825 and in 1797 succeeded the business of Effingham Embree. CONDITION:
Mvt: NR, fully wound, balance not moving freely, overhaul needed, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright gilt plates, some small scratches around plate pin position, some mild micro-fine scratches elsewhere, dust-cap with scratches around opening position of slide, slide not moving fully to closed position; dial with some hls at 2:30 and 8, small edge flake near 3; excellent hands; outer case shows light wear, an attractive dark patina, ding to bezel near 2, button latch good; inner case shows light wear, sharp ding to edge at 10:30, mild ding to left perimeter of rear, repair of pendant junction evident with solder excess internally; tight bow; good domed bull's-eye glass crystal.
